Full of twists and turns and secret codes, Vertigo Theatre has taken on Dan Brown’s famous treasure hunt to close out its season. The Da Vinci Code is a fun adventure that utilizes projections and an intricate set to take audiences on this wild ride.
In it we meet protagonists Robert Langdon (Graham Percy) and Sophie Neveu (Isabella Pedersen) as they try to unravel the code before forces of darkness can extinguish a key secret, forever.
The set-up is dramatic — inside the deep labyrinth of the Louvre, a museum curator is found viciously murdered. Alongside his body are a series of mysterious codes. In a race against time, it is up to Professor Langdon, along with cryptologist Neveu, to solve the centuries-old mystery of the Holy Grail.
A crowd-pleaser adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, the show itself is well-acted and engaging, if a bit too long, and does manage to take viewers to various different scenes around the world. Fairly light fare, it’s an enjoyable production overall and fits well with the Vertigo tradition of something fun as its last show of the season.
If you’re a fan of the book or the film, you probably already have tickets. But, if you’re like me and have seen the movie 20 years ago and mostly forgot, it’s not a bad way to spend an evening. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
The Da Vinci Code runs until June 8, 2025, and more shows have been added to the run. Three stars out of five.
